Each month, the Formulary Book Club introduces a staff, student, faculty, or alumni of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and gets their recommendation for a great read.
This month, we meet Sara Bosek, PharmD candidate ’23 and Alumni Co-Chair with the Student Senate Executive Committee. Sara’s Formulary Book Club recommendation is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon.
The story follows a fifteen-year-old, Christopher, whose neighbor’s dog was killed under mysterious circumstances. His investigation into the mystery unveils truths about his own life that he could never have predicted, forcing him to re-evaluate his thoughts on truth, love, and lying. “The duality of this novel as both a mystery and a coming-of-age story drives the reader to confront their own experiences with such concepts, and highlights how our simplistic childhood ideation of these emotions matures as we do,” says Sara. “For me, this was such a wonderful and thought-provoking story and one that I found myself reflecting on long after I had finished reading.”
Sara is in her third year at the School where she has taken on many extra-curricular roles. She is a brother of Kappa Psi, a Peer Mentor to first-year students, a tutor with Rho Chi, a SHAC Medication Assistance Program Coordinator, and Alumni Co-Chair with Student Senate. Through this last role she has had many opportunities to interact with alumni, which she says is a fulfilling and rewarding experience: “I have met so many incredible people in pharmacy who have inspired me and guided my plans post-graduation.”
Outside of school, Sara has been exploring the Triangle through hiking, running, trying new restaurants, and visiting new coffee shops. Her favorite is Lanza CafĂ© in Carrboro. During the pandemic, she took up a new hobby – crochet! Sara also practices yoga and says she loves to cook and, of course, to read.
Thank you for the book recommendation, Sara!
