William Whitaker Moose, Sr., BSPhar ’60, who passed away on April 9, 2025, was a pillar in the pharmacy profession. Committed to excellence, Whit practiced pharmacy to the highest standard and dedicated much of his time to serving his own community and helping others.
Whit graduated from the UNC School of Pharmacy with a BS in Pharmacy in 1960. His pharmacy journey, however, started much earlier at Moose Drug Company, the family’s pharmacy founded by Whit’s grandfather.
Whit’s dedication to the pharmacy practice and advancement of the profession has allowed him to become a great leader, which can be seen through his 20+ years of service on the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy, including three terms as President, along with his terms as President of the North Carolina Pharmacy Alumni Association and the National Community Pharmacy Association.
Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations when he was awarded the Bowl of Hygeia, a national community service award given to those with an outstanding record of community service. Whit was also honored by the UNC School of Pharmacy when he was awarded the Pharmacy Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award in 1994, as well as by the Campbell University School of Pharmacy with the M. Keith Fearing Jr. Community Pharmacy Award.
His contributions as a leader have been recognized by several organizations, including the American Pharmacists Association Foundation and the National “As a leader and innovator who addressed his community’s health care challenges, Whit fully embodied our mission at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy,” shares Angela Kashuba, Dean of the School. “We can’t be more proud of continuing his legacy of learning and serving NC in collaboration with Moose Pharmacy and his family.”
The magnitude of Whit’s contribution, however, cannot only be measured in awards or accolades, as his service has positively impacted the lives of countless people. Whether serving his community from their family pharmacy, Moose Drug Company, to being a volunteer fire fighter, Whit always prioritized the safety and well-being of others.
Whit will be greatly missed, but his hard work and leadership has paved the way for pharmacists entering the profession, enabling others to continue his legacy and practice pharmacy to the highest degree of excellence.

He was a quiet man who demonstrated his love for his fellow man. I’ve know Whit since my first year in pharmacy school. I’ve watched his son and grandson mature in our profession not on Whit’s coattails but by his encouragement and example. I’m privileged to have known him for 50 years.
